Margin on precious metals: what works.

A good price follows the market and covers your craftsmanship. How to build a margin that fits every product.

Metal value as the starting point

Every price starts with the metal value: price × weight × fineness. What comes on top pays for design, craftsmanship, stones, warranty, shipping and profit.

Three kinds of products

Coins and bars

Metal value is almost everything. A small markup of 2 to 6% on the ask is common.

Gold jewellery

Combine a percentage of the metal value with a fixed amount for the work. A heavy chain stays affordable and a fine ring stays profitable.

Silver jewellery

The metal value is low, so the fixed amount matters more. Use a minimum price so light items never fall below your floor.

Ask for selling, bid for buying

When selling, use the ask: that is what it costs to restock the metal. When buying old gold, use the bid with a discount per fineness.

Rounding

Round to 50 cents, whole euros or €5 so jewellery gets clean prices while coins stay exact. Try margins in the calculator.
